The run up to Copenhagen

November 10, 2009
The Green Thing have produced an amusing little film that expresses a key sentiment that I think bears repeating.

There is a lot riding on Copenhagen and it is very possible that nothing significant happens there because people are looking for elegant solutions and frankly speaking most things that work do not start out elegant.

You see most complex things that are built that work are at first made out of lots of different little things that worked already that have been cobbled together and this is often messy and inelegant and difficult to understand and not necessarily good for a satisfactory political sound bite.

Yet if it works at all then its much better than doing nothing so lets not sacrifice our whole planet for the sake of the missing political sound bites and make everyone who attends the summit do whatever it takes to cobble something together that works.

Lets also single out for special attention all the countries and people who do not attend and who should attended. Because the only reason they probably have for not to putting everything into Copenhagen is they they feel they will look better if they are not there so lets make them feel that being there is much better than not being there.

Contact the people in your world who should be there and let them know how you'll feel if they are a no show!

Deforestation has preceeded the collapse of several civilisations

November 3, 2009
Here is an example of a civilization that collapsed due to deforestation http://www.physorg.com/news176368228.html

Now given that today we have one huge planet wide civilization that is becoming more homogenized all the time and given we are rapidly deforesting our world is it perhaps just possible that we might have something to learn from the mistakes of ancient civilizations such as these?

Now you could argue that technological progress will serve us better than it did them and my question t...

Many fronts

November 2, 2009
Just a very quick update tonight.

Today we made progress on several fronts;

We began our partnership on rural radio to promote permaculture forestry education in Zambia where we will aid in the production of shows that teach local farmers how to grow more economical and economic crops.

We continued development of our proposal to begin a reforestation, permaculture and entrepreneurial school on St Kitts and Nevis.

We began the follow up communications from the meetings on Friday and to prepare to ...

Two interesting perspectives on reforestation for profit.

Carbon Credits - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI9fqxdghlo

and

Teak - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIJtVILqKqs

Now what if we could get multiple carbon credits for the net cooling impact of reforesting causing cloud formation combined with the long term sequestration of carbon in an environment where local people are incented to keep the forest healthy and productive?

Working on fine tuning all of the weforest internet presence added the facebook widget and happy to see the number of fans we have there is growing.

Just a reminder to everyone to use #weforest when talking about weforest on twitter. I am hoping for some good news regarding getting one of my favorite celebrities to do a voice over for our video.

Preparing too for the visit to Copenhagen working out who to see and when is proving to be a huge challenge as I hear there will be 20,000 people vis...

Strategies

October 23, 2009
After spending all day talking with various partners some of our strategies are becoming more integrated.

I am  particularly excited by the concept of combining a type of talk back radio show using frontlinesms as the "Talk" back mechanism a so called SMS-Back radio show where education on local permaculture forestry and entrepreneurialism can be provided.

Also exciting is the idea of student microcredit adn micro finance to create a sustainable interface between the Internet world and the tree...

Outages galore

October 20, 2009
Amazingly both our social network provider socialgo and our photo forum provider Flickr have gone down in the past 24 hours. As well Twitter has been over capacity several times as well.

Fortunately socialgo have come back up and all our data is safe and our main web site never went down so the disruption is minimal.

We are now waiting to see Flickr come back up (Flickr being owned by Yahoo we are confident it will be ok)

We just added a collaborative mind map to our blog page to encourage peop...

Thank you everyone who has donated money so far! You will be glad to know that we have just kicked off our partnership with Replanting a Rainforest  and that they will be posting continuous progress updates on our discussion forum with their progress in replanting 24+ Square kilometers of Brazilian rainforest in a sustainable way.

This is just the first of many partnerships and initiatives that will be supported by weforest.com to help move forward the global agenda of reforestation.

We have started a flickr group

October 18, 2009
One of the very cool things about web 2.0 is all the neat stuff people have implemented around location based services.

So we have founded a new Flickr WeForest group and to start with it is an artistic celebration of forests and tree.

In the future though there is amazing potential as the group has a map where you can place your photos (or if there are geo-tagged they will be placed automatically)

This means that anyone with a digital camera or a smartphone can help us survey the worlds for...
